  1. MAY 1990 SCOTTISH REGIONS
  2. In  May 1990 all Scottish Regional Council seats were up for  re-
  3. election. 
  4.  
  5. In the event, all four Scottish parties could claim  satisfaction 
  6. on the night. The Labour Party retained control of Lothian, Fife, 
  7. Central and Strathclyde, and overall gained 10 seats on its  1986 
  8. performance. The Conservatives lost 7 seats, but saw their  share 
  9. of the vote increase from around 17 to 19.5 percent. The Scottish 
  10. Nationalist  Party  also  increased its share of  the  vote,  and 
  11. gained  6  seats.  For  the  Liberal  Democrats,  fearing  a  bad 
  12. performance,  the  loss  of only 2 seats  compared  to  the  1986 
  13. Alliance performance was a considerable relief.
